Expressing the spirit of caring is one of the goals associated with the National Salute to Veteran Patients. The purpose of the national salute program is to pay special tribute and express appreciation to Veterans. The program also aims to increase community awareness of the role of the VA Medical Center, and encourage people to visit hospitalized Veterans and become involved as volunteers.

For 25 years, the nationally syndicated column started by the late Ann Landers, now called Ask Annie, began asking readers to send Valentine cards and letters to hospitalized Veterans at their nearest VA Medical Center.

Voluntary Services at the Wilmington VAMC received numerous of handmade Valentine cards from local school children. This year, the cards were given to Veterans throughout the medical center during the medical center's official program honoring hospitalized Veterans.\

Many thanks to the organizational donors that make the salute a success!
